Analysis: Go Hunting

On the surface, Steve’s article from 2010-10-16, Go Hunting makes a logical point. If you are going to eat meat everyday, you should kill an animal yourself, at least once. I don’t eat any animals except fish, but I have gone fishing (unsuccessfully). However, Steve suggests you can extend this idea to many other areas of your life, which is utterly unsustainable.

“There are lots of ways to extend the ideas in this article of course. Food choices are just one application. The overall point is that if you can’t bring yourself to participate in the processes you’re supporting right now through your choices, then do you really respect those processes?

So if you use gasoline, does that mean you have to visit an oil refinery? If you are an American taxpayer, do you have to visit Iraq and Afghanistan? If you use a computer, do you have to know programming? Or are you being disrespectful because you can’t bring yourself to participate in the process you’re supporting by using a computer?

“Go Hunting” is on shaky ground to begin with. It certainly should not be extended to other domains.

  1. 1. Taxes aren’t optional
    2. Using your computer without knowing programming doesn’t result in you ignorantly consuming your computer without true appreciation.
    3. Perhaps people should be more aware of fossil fuels, maybe they would waste less if they were less ignorant?

Seems like you’re just trying really hard to criticize and poke holes in steve, yet to me you come off as trying to hard and look kind of stupid because you didn’t really make any point at all except that you want to criticize steve.

This doesn’t mean I 100% agree with his article, but he certainly did a better job writing something semi-interesting. I like the idea of being honest enough to kill your food yourself, shed the blood yourself, people would be less ignorant this way.

  2. Richard says:

    1. Sure they are, you can move to a different country and pay taxes to them instead.
    2. Sure it does, you do dumb stuff like using special characters in file names or running useless software.
    3. Steve isn’t proposing awareness, he’s proposing action. He didn’t say you should just read about slaughterhouses. He said you should participate in killing if you eat meat.

Sounds like you are just trying really hard to criticize my criticism. The site is Steve Pavlina Watch, not The Steve Pavlina Fan Club.
